"A New Generation Of Wines From An Ancient And Unique Terroir"

Imagine 600 hectares of vines planted in fertile soils that sit on a bed of river stone metres deep. Since 1840, this ancient flood plain has been home of the Merwida Vineyards and generations of the Van der Merwe family. A new generation of Merwida wines called "Riverstone" is now their focus. These wines, made from grapes of selected vineyard blocks in the modern Merwida Winery, capture the essence of this magical terroir.

RED WINES: Vinification
These hand-selected grapes are 100% de-stemmed, fermented with selected yeasts with periodic pump-overs. Wine left on skins for 6-8 days. The skins are then lightly pressed and blended back into the free run wine. Full malo-lactic takes place.

An elegant classically styled Shiraz, peppery and smoky with rich blackberry flavours.

RIVERSTONE RUBY CABERNET 2005

Winemakers comment

Full of Blackcurrant and Rasberry flavours. Ripe, soft tannins with a hint of cassis and chocolate in the palate. Coffee and vanilla flavours extracted from the toasted oak barrels.

Rich blackberry flavours with a lingering finish of French Oak barrel maturation on the palate.

These hand picked, hand-selected grapes are lightly pressed, fermented at cool temperatures with minimal skin contact and left on their lees for 6-8 weeks.

This highly aromatic Sauvignon Blanc bursts with flavours of green peppers and asparagus, with undertones of tropical fruit.

Winemakers comment

Bananas and tropical flavours from fullripe Chardonnay, but not dominating the typical peach and apricot flavours of the Viognier. Full fruity wine with a nice creamy palate and sweet nose.

FORTIFIED WINES: Vinification
We offer two fortified wines, made in two uniquely different ways.  However, both of these liqueur stile wines had distilled alcohol added to natural wine, to increase the alcohol to 16%.

Winemakers comment

6 Cultivars blended and fortified with 5 year old brandy.  This Port has a nutty nose with typical Ruby Port flavours and raisin overtones.  Full-bodied and aromatic.
